How do we calcualte the sales numbers

Let's check how we calculate all numbers in the sales reports.
We use the same terms and formula with the Shopify's report to ensure we're in the same page. Learn more from Shopify docs


Terms & Formula



Order count: how many orders placed in a period

Units sold: how many ordered quantity of products

Net units sold: actual units sold of products

[Units Sold] - [Units Returnned]


Gross sales: equates to product price x quantity (before taxes, shipping, discounts, and returns) for a collection of sales. Pending and unpaid orders are included. Test, canceled, and deleted orders aren't included.

[Units Sold] x [Selling Price]


Discount Amount: Equates to line item discount + order level discount share for a collection of sales.
All discounts are applied before taxes.
Discounts are created using discount codes, not the compare-at price.

Return amount: the value of goods returned by a customer.

Net sales: the actual sales

[Gross Sales] - [Discounts] - [Return Amount]


Shipping fee: equates to shipping charges - shipping discounts - refunded shipping amounts.

Tax amount: The total amount of taxes based on the orders.

Total sales: the total amount customers paid

[Net Sales] + [Tax Amount] + [Shipping Fee]


COGs: cost of good sold

[Net units sold] x [Unit Cost]


Gross profit: calculated by subtracting the product cost from the net sales

Profit margin %: percent of goss profit per net sales

[Gross Profit] / [Net Sales]


Average order value:

[Total Sales] / [Order Count]


Units per transaction:

[Units Sold] / [Order Count]


Customers Count: how many customers bought in a period
